10 things every teacher needs…

Your school doors are open ready for the new school year ahead, one question that was posted on a social media site sparked a great debate… What are the top 10 supplies teachers actually need in their classroom to begin their new school year?

Take a look at the top 10 items and find out why they are so important in each classroom.

1. A Classroom Set of iPads

The iPad in the classroom brings education to life. Students have endless access to valuable information such as a dictionary and thesaurus, which previously were only available in printed format. Interactive technology makes learning more engaging and memorable and tools such as audio and video recorders can change the way that learning takes place and homework is completed.

2. Heavy Duty Pencil Sharpener – see item 5!

3. A Classroom Assistant

Evidence shows that TAs have a positive effect – around three or four months’ worth of extra academic progress across the year – if their interventions are formal and in small groups. A report says: “Crucially, these positive effects are only observed when TAs work in structured settings with high-quality support and training.”

4. Interactive Whiteboard

5. Pencils – and lots of themwe’re talking hundreds

Pencils also play an important social role in the classroom and any learning environment. One thing pencils do is break a lot. So kids/students use the pencil sharpener a lot. Many times, they break their pencils on purpose, just so they can go to the pencil sharpener to socialize. Taken from one perspective, this is a major disruption to the learning process. However much of the social learning happens at the pencil sharpener!

6. A Printer – with ink!

Classroom rules, homework, notes, name cards, you name it – easy access to printing documents in the classroom makes it easy to return back to running your class effectively without having to leave the room.

7. Sturdy & Solid Furniture

This has a positive impact on learning and development, and who doesn’t want a nice looking classroom with great furniture right?

8. Cleaning Supplies, Maintenance & First Aid

Maintaining the highest standards in any setting is important – from disinfectant, bleach, toilet rolls and air-freshener to washing-up liquid, first aid and hand sanitisers, they all have important roles to play. These supplies never get old.

9. Exercise Books

The evidence of learning captured in pupil’s books gives an accurate insight of progression through written communication.

10. Students Willing To Learn

Even with all the previous supplies, teachers need students who are alert and willing to learn, a good attitude and work ethic can make a classroom with no supplies an absolute learning zone.
